When Thomasina Miers first arrived in Mexico aged eighteen, she fell so in love with its food that she went back to live there, opening up a cocktail bar in Mexico City and using her free time to travel the country and cook with some of Mexico’s top chefs. After returning to London and winning BBC2’s MasterChef in 2005, Thomasina spent 6 months cooking for Skye Gyngell at Petersham Nurseries and then went on to open the Mexican street food cantina, Wahaca, which won the Observer Food Monthly’s ‘best cheap eats’ award, and has now opened over a dozen branches. Thomasina was recently described by the Mexican Ambassador to London as ‘Mexico’s greatest ambassador’.
Thomasina writes food articles for Waitrose Food Illustrated and the Financial Times, and had a regular column in the Weekend section of the Saturday Times from 2006-2009. Thomasina writes a weekly recipe column for the Guardian’s Saturday Weekend Magazine. She co-presented both the Wild Gourmets and presented ‘A Cook’s Tour of Spain’ in early 2008 for Channel 4. She co-edited SOUP KITCHEN (HarperCollins, 2005) which has raised nearly £100,000 for charity, and has published six recipe books – COOK (HarperCollins, 2006); WILD GOURMETS (Bloomsbury, 2007) which accompanied the Channel 4 series of the same name; MEXICAN FOOD MADE SIMPLE (Hodder, 2010) which also had a TV series of the same name; WAHACA: MEXICAN FOOD AT HOME (Hodder, 2012); CHILLI NOTES (Hodder, 2014); her latest book is HOME COOK (Guardian Faber, 2017).
In her free time, Thomasina supports local markets, cooks seasonal food, is inspired by her travels, rifle shoots and dances.
