Jenny Offill’s novel DEPT. OF SPECULATION has made it to the shortlist of the International Dublin Literary Award, along with nine other books. Nominations were submitted by public libraries in major cities throughout the world and 160 novels were on the long list. The Award aims to promote excellence in world literature and offers a prize of €100,000 to the winning author. The winner of the award will be announced on the 9th of June. Jenny has recently been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for fiction and is currently a visiting writer in the MFA program at Syracuse University.

We are pleased to announce that Professor Marcus du Sautoy has been chosen as one of the fifty new Fellows of The Royal Society. The Royal Society is the UK and Commonwealth’s Academy of Sciences and is the oldest such institution in continuous existence. Each year the existing members elect new Fellows from among those who have made ‘a substantial contribution to the improvement of natural knowledge, including mathematics, engineering science and medical science’. Marcus du Sautoy is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford where he holds the prestigious Simonyi Chair for the Public Understanding of Science and is a Fellow of New College. His mathematical research has covered a great many areas including group theory, number theory and model theory, but he has been equally successful in his promotion of mathematics to the general public. He has published a number of best-selling books and appears regularly on television and radio. The society’s president, Venki Ramakrishnan, welcomed the new Fellows saying, ‘The scientists elected to the Fellowship are leaders who have advanced their fields through their ground breaking work. We are delighted to welcome them to the Royal Society.” Marcus’s new book WHAT WE CANNOT KNOW is published by HarperCollins.
